A Message from the Director General

Our Mission

To conduct innovative agricultural research that enhances food security, improves livelihoods, and promotes sustainable development in South Ethiopia through science-based solutions.

Our Vision

To be the leading agricultural research institute in Ethiopia, recognized for excellence in research, innovation, and technology transfer that transforms rural communities.

Our Values

Excellence in research, integrity in all our activities, collaboration with stakeholders, innovation in problem-solving, and commitment to sustainable development.

Our History

Established in 1995, the South Ethiopian Agricultural Research Institute (SEARI) was founded with the vision of addressing the unique agricultural challenges faced by the diverse agro-ecological zones of South Ethiopia. Over the past three decades, SEARI has grown from a small research organization to a comprehensive institute with five specialized research centers.

Our journey began with a focus on crop improvement and soil management research. Through strategic partnerships with international organizations, universities, and government agencies, we have expanded our research portfolio to include livestock development, natural resource management, and climate-smart agriculture.

Today, SEARI stands as a beacon of agricultural innovation in Ethiopia, having contributed to the development of over 100 improved crop varieties, trained thousands of farmers and extension workers, and published hundreds of research papers that have influenced agricultural policy and practice across the region.
